Saturday Continued

My Sis and I spent the rest of our Saturday having lunch at Zaxbys and running to Michaels to Hobby Lobby. Then we had a craft day!

I got these studs at Hobby Lobby, 1/2 off and bought the backs of the earrings to glue them on. So I got a 2 new pair of earrings for $4. One is going to be a gift and one for me!
They look just like the ones I saw at Francesca's for $9, YAY! Cheap and easy, the way I like my crafts.....HA!

Don't you just love blue mason jars, becuase I sure do!
I have several clear jars that I have purchased waiting to try the tutorial on Pinterest where you can die them blue. So, we decided to give it a try.
We looked for the paint at Hob Lob, we couldn't find what we were needing so we went to Michaels, where they had the paint on clearance for $2! (even though it is not the same paint I found in the tutorial) After loosing my keys in the store for about 30 minutes... (HA) we headed home.

It worked! Here is our result, and we did all those jars with one small bottle of paint.
You can follow the tutorial here.
Here are a few quick tips:
The key is to use the translucent glass paint and do THIN coats of paint using a sponge brush.
Let it dry completely before trying a 2nd coat or the paint will peel off.
The neat thing is that after 10 hours, the jars are washable! It was so easy and now I might be addicted to dying glass blue!!

WHEW! What a day of deals and crafts!

Our small group was getting together for dinner and a baseball game downtown. We missed dinner but decided to head down to the Lookouts game, what a great group we have!
Downtown was PACKED! There were prom-go-ers everywhere, the Aquarium was having their 30th Anniversary so they had activities and the game was SOLD OUT! I have never seen a Lookouts game sold out! We looked for parking for 45 minutes! But we finally made it down there and luckily we were able to get tickets, it was definitely the perfect weather for a game and we went out for a little bit to Big River Grill after!

Hope yall had a great weekend!

Casual Sister Saturday

Sis and I decided to have a very casual no makeup, hat kind of a day on Saturday, which typically means you will run into half of the people you know... (which proved to be true that day.. ha) ANYWAYS,  we hit up several yard sales and to be perfectly honest, I did not find anything to really get that excited about but it was a fun time. There were 2 community sales we went to, the first of which, was a complete BUST... only like 2 people in the neighborhood decided to participate. HA. oh well... we then went to a massive neighborhood that literally had 50 yard sales... EASY!

Here are our finds...
2 wire wreath forms, a plate hanger (which is somehow MIA), 5 big bottles of craft paint, yarn (picture of all my sisters finds and a bag of pine cones all for... drum roll please... $.50!!! HA, this lady was packing up by the time we came around, so she was pretty much just ready to get it off her hands!

My sister got all of this for under $3 except for the serving pieces that were $7.50.  Sperrys were only $.50, coloring book $.25, 2 Mason Jars $.50, purse, tree, frame and plate holder $1.50.

I also got this wreath form for $1.

The candle and the notepad were $.50 each... then I got the Carrie CD at a Thrift Store for $1.

This plate was $.30 cents at the Thrift Store as well...

The big find of the day, was on old Singer sewing machine my sister bought for a gift....

It still works, but had the original manual along with some spar parts! How neat!

So there you have it... nothing too exciting. But I had a whole day of fun for just a few dollars!

Prom Weekend, Yard Sales and Homemade Gifts

I still cant believe that my little Brother (Bub) had his senior prom this past Friday night, time is flying by and his graduation is coming way too quickly. Unfortunately, I had to work until 6, so I missed the photo shoot but I dropped by to see him while they were eating dinner.
Such a handsome fella... I guess it runs in the family. HA!

This is Joey and his date... He thinks he is too cool for school in his sunglasses...

I actually got to hit up some yard sales this weekend. I only found 2! FAIL...2 neighborhoods near ours had neighborhood yard sales last week so it seems like I missed out and was a week late. Oh well, I did get a few things...

A brand new Bare Minerals blush for $1. Along with some root pump and some other makeup

I got this nice golf towel for the Hubs for $1.

And, I got this Pampered Chef muffin stone for $5... YAY!!!!

On another note, completely random: My dear friend who we had the party for which I shared in this post, made me these adorable, creative coasters!

I am in love with them and really want to try to make them. All it is is tiles, scrapbook paper, card stock, a sharpie and sealed with Mod-Podge. LOVE it, and how super easy is that?

Aren't Homemade gifts the best? They have always been my favorite, to give and receive, one reason I love using Pinterest! I am always up for new creative ideas, thanks Mads!

Summer Dreaming

Lately I have been dreaming about summer due to the fact it has been so warm, pools here are already open and the vacation planning has started. I have already purchased my summer ferns and even got a new American flag!
The Mr. and I are starting to work on the yard. Some of our plants from last year did not survive so we have some more planting to do and a lot of mulch to buy!

I decided to change up my guest bedroom and make it a little more summery/nautical feel with stuff I had around the house... Have a peek!
I used a white, brown and navy.

I am really liking it, not in love, but since I used stuff I had its a FREE makeover!

Also redid my bedside tables.... I like the height that this sailboat picture gives.

I like the texture of my star and I like the look of it on the table as well...

I am working on something for my dining room table too, I spotted some bubble glass with twine on it but the problem was, they were $13 a piece and only had 2 where I needed 3. So, I figured, I would just make my own for half the cost..... I am still working on it and I went crazy trying out different sizes but I think I found the perfect ones....

Here is is... still working on putting the jute on them. But I am LOVING the look!

I picked up this frame for $7. I like the blue distressed look and I need to change up my tables in the living room.

I fell in love with this jar too.. its has a blue/ hand blown look with grass tied on the top, plus you can fit a candle in it, I am thinking I will put it in my upstairs bathroom.

My little Bub had his senior chapel talk Tuesday. We decorated his table with old pictures, his drum sticks, marine stuff and UT stuff. We even had orange and white balloons and gumballs.

Here we are!

This is him speaking. He did a great job! I am so proud of him. It is going to be so hard this summer not having him here. He graduates, leaves for boot camp then goes off to college, all within a matter of days..... NOT FUN! I still cant believe he is graduating High school in May. Time sure does fly by... ENJOY IT!

Paint Tips

Hello my fellow friends! I want to warn you and tell you that this post is probably all over the place but FULL of painting information. So, if you are not interested in learning about paint, skip this one! HA!

When I was in college, I worked for a paint store as a "color and wall covering expert" where I learned all about paint and helped people choose custom colors for their home and projects. This really helped me and I wanted to share some of my knowledge, especially due to the fact that I have seen some false information out there about which paints to use for different projects.

I worked for Porter Paint and I think they have a wonderful product. But I am a little partial.

Flat, Eggshell, Semigloss, Gloss
The higher the sheen the more washable your paint is, which is why people use semigloss or gloss for woodwork.  Most people also prefer the Eggshell finish for their walls.

DO NOT use any harsh chemicals when cleaning painted walls or trim. A simple warm water and soap will do the trick.

Painters like to use Flat because of the way it hides imperfections... the higher the gloss the harder it is to hid

Oil vs Latex (water based)
how to tell if your paint is oil or latex... Get a cotton swab and some alcohol, if the paint becomes sticky or comes off it is Latex.
Oil does show more paint strokes and can only be cleaned with mineral spirits or paint thinner, this goes for your paint brushes as well.

Uses for oil paint-
A lot of people like oil for there trim because even though it is stinky and takes longer to dry, it dries harder and is usually more durable, which is why the experts recommend cabinetry and furniture be painted with oil based products.

If ever you try to put latex paint on top of oil, it will not stick, but you can put oil on top of latex.
Also, you can use oil based primer and go on top of that with oil or latex paint.

Anytime you are priming a surface make sure you sand it and clean it, that is key!

Why are darker colors harder to cover, or why do they take more coats of paint?
Darker colors are made with a clear base where are the lighter colors are made with a white base. This is why the color Red is so hard to paint and can take so many coats. Where as something with a white base covers better.
If you are wanting to paint a dark color like chocolate, or red etc... (unless it is out of the can Black) try having your primer tinted gray. Since primer is cheaper, and prepares your surface, it will allow for less coats of paint.

Another thing I always used to tell people is:  From the swatches... blue gets bluer and yellow gets yellower. Trust me when I say this. The customers who picked a yellow and before I had them mix it I warned them... they came back and said it was way too bright! TOLD YOU SO! Always go with a more muted yellow! Unless you like high-lighters

Samples are wonderful and worth the money of trying out a color. COLORS IN THE STORE DO NOT LOOK THE SAME IN YOUR HOME. The lighting is different, the natural light is different. If you are at the store, go to a window or take them outside to look at. When you buy a sample I recommend that you do not paint it on the wall. Here is why; colors change... all the time. Paint a piece of poster board or cardboard that way you can move it around and see how it looks on all your walls with all your furniture. And don't forget to look at the color at different times in the day because that changes the look of it too. You can have the same color in 2 rooms and it looks completely different.
Make sure you look at the bottom of the swatch. You can tell if the color will look more green, pink or yellow (especially with neutrals!) be careful of this! A lot of neutrals have a pink or green tint to them and can look poopy once they are on the wall!

Custom color match: If you have a color you want matched I would NOT take it to a big box store, simply because they stick it in the computer and that is all. You can take it to SW, Benjamin Moore or Porter, they will take the time to get the match exactly where you want it and tweak it until is is perfect for you. Plus, the paint quality is overall better.

Touch Ups- There really is no such thing. Paint gets dirty over the years, so if ever you have a few spots on the wall, it is best to paint the entire wall so you can't see spots, also make sure your sheens match!

Lets say you buy a few gallons of paint. Even though it is the same formula, it is best to mix the paint together, especially if 2 different people make it! You can get the same paint but they don't match exactly, so mix it together if you can or use it in a different wall. In other words, don't trim out with one gallon and paint the wall with another, you might be able to tell a difference.

Here is another thing to remember: There are formulas for the paint where color is added. This can help you tell if the color will lean more towards pink or yellow or green.  It is ok to ask which colorant goes into the color you choose.
Also, you can always darken a color of its too light but never lighten a color!

When painting furniture, ALWAYS sand prime and seal! I prefer to use an oil based primer with semigloss paint and then a finish coat. I have never used wax before but heard it works fairly well.

To avoid paint strokes on your walls, use a 3/4" nap roller and paint "W's", for cutting in and trim work, I prefer a good, short handled, angled brush.

I know this post was probably a little all over the place but I thought it might be helpful to share some of my knowledge. I hope this helps and gets you inspired to get some of your spring time painting projects started!

Yard Sale Season!

It is Yard Sale season.....YIPPEE, and today was the perfect day for it.... now if only I didn't  have to work today and every other weekend....hmm

BUT, I did get a chance to go Thrifting after work today, and I was very successful and a little giddy I must say, HA!

I got this sweet lace pillow for a steal of $2. I am pretty sure I saw the same one at TJ Maxx a few months back.

I also got this large pillar candle for $.99 and the lil tote for $2. The other side has little ducks on it, so I plan on spray painting it white, distressing it and using it to hold utensils and napkins for parties!

I spotted these lovely, plump hounds tooth black and cream pillows. I got 2 for $5 each, not too shabby eh? I wish the insert came out so I could get a monogram embroidered on it... oh well!

I also went to TJ Maxx and fell in love with this paisley yellow table runner. Perfect for summer time. When did I become so obsessed with table lines?

I picked up some ferns yeserday to put in my galvanized tins. They were on sale at Lowes for $7.99

Here is one on our newly painted and stained porch!

On another note, I was doing the laundry tonight and had just closed the lid, when my Hubs called and told me he thought he had left his wallet in his shorts from the other day....
oops, too late! At least it didn't go through a full wash... just a little dip! HA!

That's all folks! Who else got some good deals this weekend?

Everyone Loves a Deal

So, the tornado that came through a few weeks ago was devastating... it did a lot of damage here in our area
BUT.... we got a new roof, siding and they also stained and painted our front porch and back deck.... this cut our "Spring to-do list" in half! Our front porch was looking ROUGH, especially with all the white paint that was chipping off (which we put off from LAST year.. HA).... but not anymore....

Here it is, fresh paint and all! YIPPEE!!!

I also was shopping at Kirkland's the other day and they has some super cute ruffle table linens (napkins, runners and place mats) in some fabulous colors, plus they were on sale....

so I snatched up the white ruffle box-pleat table runner, isn't it cute? So summery

Today I also went to Plato's closet to sell 2 of my purses. I was skeptical because a lot of their stuff is very young, but they do have designer jewelry, shoes, bags and sunglasses. So, I basically traded 2 of them and came out with these 2 things....

fake D & G tan  purse

And I got this cute, colorful Lily summer bracelet! Score!

Everybody loved a good deal! You cant beat trading in some old for some new!

Easter

We had a great Easter. I still cant believe it has come and gone. I only got a few pictures this year.... and the pictures from my side of the family are on my parents camera, so I will have to get those soon....
We went to church that morning and listened to a wonderful sermon.... it always is! We are so blessed to have such a wonderful Pastor, I really and honestly hope he never leaves!!
Then, we decided to do a brunch at my sisters house and also celebrated my Moms birthday, then we headed down to GA to see the BIG family on my husbands side and eat a super yummy southern lunch! Last, went to visit Caleb's Grandmother, so it was a long day!
These are only the grand kids plus spouses and their kids... plus 3 more babies on the way! Yea, big family!

And here we are!

It was difficult to get a serious picture of all the boys...this is 1 of 1,000

picture 1,001...decent!

And it took a while to get a good picture of "our Girls" me, one of Caleb's brothers girlfriend, Kristen and his 2 sisters Alex and Sydney

I loved this picture I got.... just another day on the tractor on the farm...

Hope y'all had a great and happy Easter. I am so glad that the grave was empty! Thank you Jesus!

"He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me."
  Matthew 28: 6-10
